You’ve probably worn it before—perhaps without even realizing it. Soft, light, warm, and comfortable. It’s no wonder it’s one of the most beloved fabrics for the home, among outdoor enthusiasts, and in our electric heated blankets and heating mats. But where does fleece actually come from? How did it become so popular? And why is it so suitable for heated products?

In this blog we delve into the origins, development and modern uses of fleece.

What is fleece anyway?

Fleece is a synthetic fabric, usually made of polyester (sometimes combined with other fibers such as spandex or nylon). The material is woven and then brushed, giving it its characteristic soft, fleecy texture. This texture is similar to wool—hence the name fleece, the English word for “fur.”

What makes fleece unique is its excellent insulation, extreme lightness, and ability to wick moisture away from the body. Ideal for clothing and warm home textiles.

The origin: born in the outdoor sports world

Fleece as we know it originated in the late 1970s, when the American textile company Malden Mills (now better known as Polartec) was looking for a synthetic alternative to wool. Wool was warm, but heavy, expensive, and difficult to dry. Moreover, it could be itchy.

Malden Mills, in collaboration with outdoor brand Patagonia, developed a new material that offered the advantages of wool without its drawbacks. In 1981, Patagonia launched the first fleece jacket. Lightweight, warm, and breathable—it was an instant hit with climbers, hikers, and campers.

Fleece & sustainability: recycled PET bottles

A unique aspect of fleece is that it’s often made from recycled PET bottles. In the 1990s, Polartec began producing fleece from plastic bottles – a revolutionary idea at the time.

Today, many fleece fabrics are made partially or entirely from recycled materials. This not only makes fleece comfortable but also a step toward circular textile production.

From outside to inside: fleece conquers the living room

What began as functional clothing for mountaineers quickly found its way into everyday life. Today, you see fleece everywhere:

In sweaters and cardigans

In blankets, plaids and pajamas

In furniture and cushions

And of course… in heated products such as electric blankets, heating mats and foot warmers

Why? Because fleece simply feels wonderful against your skin. It’s soft, breathable, and warm without being heavy. Ideal for products where comfort is paramount.

Why fleece is perfect for electric heating blankets and mats

We use fleece in our products for a reason. Fleece’s properties are perfectly suited to electric heating:

Fast heat distribution: fleece retains heat well and distributes it evenly.

Softness: The material feels comfortable and cozy against the skin.

Airy: the fabric is breathable, so it doesn’t feel stuffy – even during prolonged use.

Lightweight: makes it comfortable for everyday use, without having to lie under a heavy blanket.

Washable: fleece is easy to clean and dries quickly, which is important for products you use regularly.

Whether you choose an electric blanket on the couch, a heating mat in your office chair, or a foot warmer under your desk – fleece makes it even more comfortable.

Is fleece easy to maintain?

Yes! That’s also one reason why fleece is so popular. It’s colorfast, wrinkle-resistant, dries quickly, and still feels soft even after multiple washes.

A few tips:

Wash fleece at a maximum temperature of 30°C

Use a mild detergent

Avoid fabric softener (it damages the fibers)

Hang fleece to air dry – preferably without a dryer

This way, your fleece product will remain beautiful and soft for a long time.

Please note: fleece and microplastics

A concern with synthetic fabrics like fleece is that they can release microplastics during washing. Fortunately, there are solutions for this:

Use a special washing bag (such as the Guppyfriend) that catches microfibers

Wash fleece as little as possible

Preferably choose fleece made from recycled material – this has less impact on the environment

Many manufacturers, including us, consider this when choosing materials. Durability and comfort can go hand in hand.

<3 Fleece: a keeper

Fleece has become an indispensable part of our daily lives.
